We are so excited to introduce our amazing friend BRITTANY PERRY-RUSSELL as our #FEMMEFEATUREFRIDAY this week. Brittany is an outstanding woman, mentor, and triple threat artist, and we were so lucky to have her speak as one of our guest industry panel experts at YOU GOT THIS, LA! just last week.
Brittany began her career as a professional dancer, and found great success. As the "It Girl" of music videos and tours, she has appeared alongside chart-topping artists including Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Jessie J, Nick Jonas, Meghan Trainor, and many more. Brittany is a woman of many talents and she fearlessly pursues whatever sets her heart on fire, so she has recently made the transition from lead dancer to actress. We are very happy to announce that you can watch her in the new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why coming out March 31st! She truly leaves a positive mark wherever she goes, and it's her incredible work ethic, heart, and courage that allow her to go the distance in whatever she chooses to do.
Being able to interview Brittany this week has been such a delight. We are constantly inspired by Brittany's fierce spirit and by how she always stands tall, knows her worth, and will fight for what she desires. She has a huge heart and she is extremely passionate about the arts. She is a great role model for our YGTGirls and for many others, and we are so grateful that a woman like her exists in this world. Thank you Britt for taking the time to share your beliefs and encouraging words with us!
How have you embraced your authentic voice and style in the industry as a dancer and actress?
I've embraced my voice and style in the industry by being unapologetic for how God created me. I'm so grateful that I was raised to believe that God doesn't make mistakes, so I genuinely bring every aspect of myself to my art. I embrace my flaws and all that comes with being Brittany Perry-Russell and I hope that quality will inspire others. Our authentic voice is such a powerful tool. We're not meant to be followers, we are placed on this earth to be leaders. We are not meant to be the same, we are born to be different.
What woman inspires you the most?
My mother will always be the first person that comes to mind when I'm asked this question. All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother. Words can't describe what a support she is in my life. My mom has been my greatest teacher. By example, she has taught me compassion, love, and fearlessness.
Feminism is a word for everyone, not just females. Its correct definition is "equality politically, culturally, socially, economically." What does feminism mean to you?
Feminism to me simply means freedom of choice. It is the belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. You can be a feminist and be the CEO of a company or a stay at home mom.
What is the advice you'd give to your 10-year old self?
I would tell my ten year old self to not let others dictate my life. The goal in life is to be happy, because sadly many people grow up only to settle. Always make a conscious effort to surround yourself with positive, nourishing, and uplifting people. You're going to be as a good as the people you surround yourself with. These people won't let you play small in life. There will be many trials, obstacles, and hardships. Just know that hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny. Most importantly, put God first. When we seek him first, everything in life falls into place.
What’s your definition of a YGTGirl?
The definition of a YGTG Girl is a female who does not require validation from others. She's a true leader and influencer. A YGTG Girl chooses to love, inspire, and empower other females because she understands that happiness and success is never reached alone. One woman can make a difference but a YGTG Girl understands that together we can change the world.
