Can you tell us about how you discovered your passion for dance? Did you always know you wanted to make a career of it?
My passion for dance has always been in me. I started dancing at 3 and haven't stopped since! I was a studio kid that took up to 12 classes a week and went to competitions on the weekends. I started teaching dance at the young age of 15 at a local studio and during high school I was the captain and main choreographer of my dance team. Having experienced all things dance during my younger years, after high school I knew I wanted to do something with dance whether that meant dancing on stage, choreographing, or teaching!
What has been an important lesson you have learned in your many years working professionally as a dancer and choreographer?
The most important lesson that I've learned in my many years working professionally is that there is room for everyone in this industry, but only if you pave your own way and create purposeful things that highlight your strengths and interests. If things aren't going your way, it's time to pivot. You can make your own opportunities and make a living if you create it yourself. I created an all-female dance company that was active for 6 years and was filled with heavy hitter female dancers and choreographers you see in the industry today. I created a dance training education program called Establish Your Empire with almost 500 alumni members from all over the world. I created Her Empire Productions where we give the community in the arts and entertainment industry empowering events centered around female empowerment. I did this all because I value Community, Education, Entrepreneurship, and Authenticity. These creations are an extension of who I am. The lesson here is to do what you love by creating things based on who you are and what your purpose is.
You are loud and proud about female empowerment. What does female empowerment mean to you?
Female Empowerment to me means being a role model to young girls and uplifting the women in your life to be the best version of themselves.
Do you have any tips you can share with our YGTGirls on how do to feel empowered and confident as not just dancers but as women?
To feel empowered and confident means to surround yourself with all things that fill you. Once you can find your true purpose of why you are here on earth, you will be able to live every minute of your life with meaning which will give you happiness and success.
What’s your definition of a YGTGirl?
My definition of a YGTGirl is a girl that owns who she is, shares her voice, and loves the community around her with integrity and love. She is a lover of life and embraces her flaws and uses her strengths for the greater good of the world.
