We are very excited for you all to meet this week’s #FEMMEFEATUREFRIDAY Alexa Anderson. This stunning woman is an incredible dancer and teacher, and she's made a hugely positive impact on the contemporary dance community. We've had the pleasure of working with Alexa on numerous occasions and we completely fell in love with her from the jump. She is a true sweetheart, a beautifully rare soul, she continuously works hard, and she shines wherever she goes. She inspires us and she will certainly inspire you!
Alexa Anderson always had the “IT” factor. She is an incredible artist and she's had the chance to perform on so many different stages around the world starting at a very young age. You may have spotted Alexa in DanceSpirit Magazine both in 2008 and 2010, and at age 17, Alexa was a principal dancer in the off Broadway contemporary dance show, “Beneath the Surface”. Soon after, she decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue her dream career as a dancer. Since then, she has been featured in several television commercials and music videos and has danced on shows such as X FACTOR, American Idol, America's Got Talent, Dancing With The Stars, All The Right Moves, and she was a top 20 contestant on Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance. She has also performed with some incredible artists like Kanye West, Queen Latifah, Colbie Caillat, Paramore, The Wanted, Icona Pop, and Demi Lovato. In addition, Alexa has toured as a cast member of Travis Wall’s highly acclaimed contemporary dance company, Shaping Sound.
Alexa is the perfect example of a badass lady who isn't afraid to be herself. She is brave enough to always be authentic to herself, and she is truly one of a kind. You absolutely can't take your eyes off of her when she performs because she has crafted her unique voice so well, and she isn't afraid to express it. Her uniqueness and true love for herself is undoubtedly contagious, and we simply adore her. Thank you so much Alexa for taking the time to share more about yourself and for being such an inspiring woman. Enjoy girls!
Where do you draw from for inspiration in your dancing and choreography?
I draw inspiration from all over. I try to stay open to be inspired by anything. Even a hardship. Id say that nature, mythology and architecture are a few things that I come back to time and again for motivation to move. Music is huge as well, of course. The right song in the right moment is incredible fuel to the fire.
How do you stay authentic to yourself? How to do embrace the things that make you unique?
I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by people who were incredibly encouraging and taught me at a young age to view the things that made me different as strengths. That shift in perspective is powerful. From there, I think it's a lot about proceeding with integrity and bravery. It's about honoring your true self without letting the fear of what others think dictate how you are. If ever I find that Im watering myself down in any choice, I remind myself that Im essentially working harder to be less special. Which is silly. Plus, being yourself to the fullest is way more fun.
What does female empowerment mean to you?
It is so important. Not only for women, but for humanity as a whole. Creating a means and providing channels through which women can raise their voices against any friction they might experience is crucial. Women's rights have been violated throughout history in some form or another all over the world, and we've made huge leaps and bounds, but continuing to uplift women in their pursuit to be treated as equals and to live their best lives will uplift us all.
What is the advice you'd give to your 10-year old self?
Don't sweat the small stuff.
What’s your definition of a YGTGirl?
A confident go- getter who knows her worth! Love and enthusiastic energy are both so powerful and contagious and I believe a YGTGirl has plenty. Both for herself, and to share with those around her.
